Big Bass Bonanza Megaways is a sequel to Big Bass Bonanza and its immediate follow-up, Bigger Bass Bonanza. Pragmatic Play was looking for a candidate to revamp by adding the Megaways engine, and they settled on their classic online slot from December 2020. Big Bass Bonanza Megaways is a 6-reel online slot game with anywhere between 2 - 7 rows, depending on the on-screen action and the size of the symbols in view. As is also usual in Megaways slots, the game has a horizontal reel that sits above the main game grid. What’s not so usual are its 46,656 paylines (reduced from the full 117,649 ways-to-win), and why Pragmatic Play did this is a bit of a mystery. Still, fans of the Big Bass franchise will be happy to learn that not much has changed from its predecessors. The slot still offers a glimpse into a tranquil underwater world full of sea life and filled with shimmying fish symbols alongside the fisherman who’s still trying to get his big catch. However, Pragmatic has also refreshed Big Bass Bonanza Megaways with a few extra features.
The whole game takes place in an ocean setting that will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has ever played a Big Bass slot, with corals and sea strands striving to reach the surface on either side of the submerged reels. So it will come as no surprise to learn that the game’s primary colour is a deep, sometimes murky, aquatic blue, as per the previous games. There are also subtle differences between them and this slot, though. The reels in the original game were separated by a string of bubbles that vertically spanned the whole length of the same. Not so here. Instead, the vertical strings of bubbles are placed on either side of the game grid. As a result, the symbols now rest within quasi-opaque squares, so you can see a little bit of the background through them; they are just as colourful, varied, and appealing as ever. What hasn’t changed are the various sound effects (including the wet plopping sound when the reels come to a stop after spinning them) and the bouncy and upbeat soundtrack.

- Tackle Box, Dragonfly, Fishing Rod symbols = these have a payout of between 2x - 7.5x the stake for 5-of-a-kind on the reels.

- Wild symbol = represented by a Fishing Net, this symbol substitutes for all other symbols apart from the Scatter and Fisherman symbols. However, it only appears on the horizontal reel above reels 2,3,4 and 5.
- Scatter symbol = represented by the eponymous Bass, this symbol appears on all the reels and is the key to unlocking the Free Spins feature.
- Fisherman symbol = appears on all the reels during the Free Spins feature.

Big Bass Bonanza Megaways offers a few bonuses and features sure to get the excitement going! Let’s take a look at them in turn.
Tumble Feature
If you’ve played other Megaways slots, then you’ll be familiar with the Avalanche or Cascading Reels feature. Here it’s called the Tumble feature, but the idea is the same. Symbols in winning combinations disappear from the reels, creating space for other symbols to fall into the recently vacated positions. These new symbols are the same size as the ones they replaced. Tumbling continues until no more winning combinations appear as a result.
Free Spins Feature
The next feature of note is the Free Spins bonus round, which is triggered by landing at least 3 Scatter symbols on the reels. The more Scatters that land, the more Free Spins are awarded:
- 3 Scatter symbols = 10 Free Spins.
- 4 Scatter symbols = 15 Free Spins.
- 5 Scatter symbols = 20 Free Spins.
- 6 Scatter symbols = 25 Free Spins.
The Fisherman symbol plays an important role in the Free Spins feature. Should any Fish Money symbols land on the reels at the same time as it, all the values of the former are collected and awarded to the player. Also, any Fisherman symbol that lands on the reels during the Free Spins feature is added to a collection meter. Every 4, the bonus round is re-triggered, awarding an additional 10 free spins plus a win multiplier:
- First re-trigger = 10 Free Spins + x2 win multiplier.
- Second re-trigger = 10 Free Spins + x3 win multiplier.
- Third re-trigger = 10 Free Spins + x10 win multiplier.
After the third re-trigger, no more are possible.
Bazooka & Dynamite Feature
During the Free Spins bonus round, 1 or 2 Fisherman symbols might be visible on-screen with no fish symbols in view. In this case, one of two things can happen. First, a Dynamite animation may trigger that makes Fish Money symbols appear on the screen in random positions. Secondly, a Bazooka animation may trigger that explodes all symbols on the screen apart from the Fisherman symbols themselves.
Megaways Feature
The incorporation of the Megaways engine means that each reel can reveal a certain number of symbols in view, and landing consecutive symbols on all reels after a spin could lead to the maximum 46,656 ways to win! All winning combinations are totalled and payouts are multiplied by the stake.
