History of Light & Wonder
Nevada-based Light & Wonder has had a storied history relative to any slot provider. To do it justice, we have to go back to 1917, to an Australian company called Autotote that manufactured totalizator systems for parimutuel wagering at racetracks. The history of Autotote itself is fascinating, though outside the purview of this overview.
Fast-forward to 2000, when Autonote bought Scientific Games Holdings Corp for $308m. Scientific Games was founded in 1973 and manufactured instant lottery equipment. The company created the first secure instant lottery ticket in 1974. Anotote officially changed its name to Scientific Games in 2001. Nine years later, Scientific Games launched SciPlay, its social gaming division.
Scientific Games then went on a spending spree, acquiring Barcrest (2010), WMS Industries (2013) and Bally (2014) in deals worth billions, acquiring classic slot games like Raging Rhino, Black Knight, Spartacus and the legendary Rainbow Riches through these deals. Acquisitions continued through 2016 and 2017, with Scientific Games buying DEQ Systems and Spicerack Media Inc.; these companies specialised in table and mobile bingo games.
In 2017, Scientific Games made a deal with Eon Productions and MGM Interactive to acquire the rights to use the James Bond licence. The company also partnered with Hasbro in 2018 to use the Monopoly brand. Light & Wonder has made good use of the licence over the years, creating several well-received Monopoly-themed slots (some as recently as 2023's Monopoly World Travel Tour).
More acquisitions followed in 2017 through to 2021. That year, Scientific Games sold its sports betting and lottery divisions. The company that bought the lottery division took the Scientific Games name. A year later, the original Scientific Games rebranded as Light & Wonder.
